  • Tristan Perich: Dual Synthesis Tour (harpsichord and 4-channel 1-bit

  • electronics (2009))
  • FREE! ALL AGES!
Location: Wall of Sound

In all of his creative activities, Perich is inspired by the aesthetics of math and physics, and works with simple forms and complex systems. The challenge of elegance provokes his compositions for solo instruments, small ensemble and orchestra. As a visual artist, he works primarily with machines to create pen-on-paper drawings that explore the limits of traditional drawing through randomness and order.

In 2004 he began work on 1-Bit Music, combining his music with primitive, hand-programmed electronics that investigate the foundations of digital sound. The Village Voice, BOMB Magazine, BPM Magazine, Res Magazine, Wired News, Cool Hunting and Spin Magazine covered the release, which has also been featured on television. Surface Magazine called the boxes "profound throwbacks to the traditional album, a response to the intangibility of iTunes and mp3s in the form hand-held artwork."

Perich's compositions have been performed by ensembles including Bang on a Can (2008 People's Commissioning Fund), counter)induction, Calder Quartet, New York Miniaturist Ensemble, Due East, Y Trio and Ensemble Pamplemousse at venues including the Whitney Museum, P.S.1 and Mass MoCA. His recent activities include electroacoustic pieces for 1-Bit Music with instrumental accompaniment. His experimental electronic music group, the Loud Objects, has performed in Germany, Japan, Italy (Screen Music 2), Norway (Piksel), England (Evolution) and the USA (including at the NIME festival). He has spoken twice at Dorkbot. Perich studied math, music and computer science at Columbia University after attending Philips Academy, Andover. More recently, he studied art, music and electronics at the Interactive Telecommunications Program at Tisch School of the Arts, NYU.

Location: Wall of Sound

Performing on the 21-string Mandinka Harp and the Turkish Oud, Kane Mathis renders compelling interpretations of these traditional musics.

Years of study with generous masters have given Kane a rare opportunity to share these traditions with other cultures.

Kane began taking trips to The Gambia, West Africa in 1997 and has continued rigorous study of the Mandinka Kora. Over the past ten years his performances have earned him recognition by the Gambian president, The Gambian minister of culture, and both national television and radio of The Gambia.

Kane’s primary kora teachers are Malamini Jobarteh of Brikama, The Gambia and Moriba Kouyate of The Gambia. The Jobarteh family remain one of The Gambia’s most important musical legacies. Tata Din din Jobarteh, Pa Bobo Jobarteh, and Siffai Jobarteh are the families current most visible exponents touring the world.

  • David Knott

  • free all ages in store to celebrate the release of David's new solo guitar CD "Sweet Little Guitar Ditties"
Location: Wall of Sound

David Knott, MT-BC, NMT is a board-certified music therapist, fellow in the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy, instrument maker, improvisor and composer living and working in Seattle. He specializes in using improvisation to engage and facilitate therapeutic change with critically ill adults and children.

Since 1982, David has been playing and recording his own music solo and in collaboration with others. His interest in music and soundmaking comes from a personal, intuitive response to vibration gleaned from early years spent exploring his grandfather’s junkyard, the process of building his guitar at the Roberto-Venn School in 1994 and every improvised musical experience. With instrument building, performances, workshops and recorded works, he seeks to stimulate the listener to a point of resonance and discovery of their own musical being.

A debut solo CD “Natura Naturans,” featuring his stringboard instruments, was released on Anomalous Records (1999). He is a founding member of animist orchestra – an ensemble that uses natural materials to create very quiet, subtly evolving soundscapes. Along with the Climax Golden Twins and Sir Richard Bishop, he is a member of the Messenger Girls Trio, whose first record on Anomalous Records is currently sold out. [Another 12" "Excelsior Salon Trio" will be released by UZU Audio (Canada) in October 2009.]

  • Born Under the Sun of Death

  • free all ages in store show!
Location: Wall of Sound

Sunday, September 27th will mark the official release of a new cd by Seattle-based Born Under the Sun of Death. This is the collaborative project between noise/experimental musicians KRGA and Thunder Grey Pilgrim, both of whom have performed at Wall of Sound events in the past. These two have been making music together on and off for the past 8 or so years, and this incarnation is by far the darkest sound exploration they've completed so far. Their new self-titled cd ranges from quiet, eerie field recorded barn noises to dark orchestral drones to blow-your-speakers-up shrieking and drum solos (??? yes, actually a double drum solo to be more precise). This event will be part of a weekend full of Debacle Records-related activities, starting Friday night at the Black Lodge, Saturday night at the Josephine, Sunday at Wall of Sound and later that evening at the Mr. Spot's Chai House.

Friday September 11, 2009 10:00pm
  • An Evening of Experimental Sounds and Noise with:

  • Jim Haynes (San Francisco)
  • Colin Andrew Sheffield (Seattle)
  • Rob Millis (Seattle)
Location: Rendezvous Jewel Box Theater 2322 2nd Ave

Jim Haynes: Drawing from shortwave radio static, electric field disturbances, controlled feedback manipulation, and numerous textural scrapings, I manifest a broken minimalism whose magnetic drones give the impression of timelessness, when in fact the environment is quite active. This engineering of disparate materials and media seeks to evince the unpredictability of decay, to manifest its potential for a rough hewn beauty, and to bare witness to its inevitability.

Colin Andrew Sheffield: After initially working with exclusively digital sources, in recent years, Sheffield has refined his approach and now focuses on the strict re-contextualization of other commercially available recordings. His aim is to distill the essential qualities of these works and to then utilize that essence for new recordings. Usually only very brief sections of the original works are selected. These raw components are then contracted, expanded, layered, and/or otherwise processed until something new is forged. The resultant music is an atmospheric soundscape, gradually shifting and unfolding, offering subtle nuance and quiet restraint. His recordings often seem to have much in common with ambient electronic music, though are equally akin to "plunderphonic" audio collage.

Rob Millis: Since the mid-’90s, Robert Millis has maintained a quiet and versatile presence in American underground music. As a performer, he has delved into areas ranging from the blistering noise rock of AFCGT to the acoustic guitar improvisations of the Messenger Girls Trio. Also, as demonstrated by his compilations of ultra-rare 78 rpm records under the banner Victrola Favorites and by his global field-recording expeditions with Sublime Frequencies, Millis seems to be in constant search of the most obscure sounds he can lay his hands on. Of all his musical endeavors, however, Millis is perhaps most well known as a member of the Seattle outfit Climax Golden Twins, a group that explores the kind of oddball, genre-bending style established by the Sun City Girls. (Incidentally, the two groups have formed various musical connections over the years.)

Midday Veil present stories older than time unraveling over a tapestry of meditative rhythms, cosmic synth drones and transcendental harmonies to form kaleidoscopic soundtracks for beatific visions.  The CDR "End of Time" documents the band's early stages as the duo of Emily Pothast & David Golightly; the current lineup also includes Chris Pollina and Timm Mason (a.k.a. Aphonia/Debacle solo artist Mood Organ).

New Zealand's Pumice grind out a shambling brand of lo-fi rock oblongitude: Think Guided by Voices if they loved Captain Beefheart much more than they do the Who. It's as if Pumice's songs are straining to achieve beauty, but their innate homeliness and awkwardness tilt them into a curious, obscure corner of the rock spectrum. In its very peculiar way, this Pumice music beguiles. - Dave Segal

  • SOLO KORA PERFORMANCE
  • free all ages in store performance!!!
Location: Wall of Sound

Chet began his study of kora, the 21 stringed harp of W. Africa, and Mandinka music locally with acknowledged American kora master, Kane Mathis. He later made two month long trips to Brikama, Gambia to live and study with two kora masters and griots, Malamini Jobarteh and Moriba Kuyateh. The kora is originally from the Gambia region, although, at present, it's most popular performers are from Mali, namely, Toumani Diabate and Mamadou Diabate. Chet has been playing kora for six years.

A kora is built from a large calabash cut in half and covered with cow skin to make a resonator, and has a notched bridge like a lute or guitar. The sound of a kora resembles that of a harp, though when played in the traditional style, it bears a closer resemblance to flamenco and delta blues guitar techniques. The player uses only the thumb and index finger of both hands to pluck the strings in polyrhythmic patterns (using the remaining fingers to secure the instrument by holding the hand posts on either side of the strings). Ostinato riffs ("Kumbengo") and improvised solo runs ("Birimintingo") are played at the same time by skilled players. The instrument is played in Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Senegal, and The Gambia. A traditional kora player is called a Jali, similar to a 'bard' or oral historian.

  • FREE ALL AGES IN STORE PERFORMANCE!!!!
Location: Wall of Sound

Rob Lowe-no, neither the actor nor the Chicago musician of 90 Day Men/Singer fame-and his partner Michael Muller named their instrumental rock project Balmorhea after a small town that functions as a rare oasis in the otherwise dry and barren desert of West Texas. The moniker works: The Austin duo, often aided by cello and violin-weilding friends, makes calm, fertile, and watery music that stands alone in the middle of the loud and fractured landscape of indie rock. This is birds-and-grass music, backed by cracked earth and power lines, and Balmorhea's sound practically breathes on the new Rivers Arms. - The Onion, August 2008

Location: Wall of Sound

As Heavy Teeth, the duo of Garek Druss and David Farrell combine forces to create frequencies from ultra heavy to cloud like and everywhere in between.

With his work as a solo sound artist and performer, Garek Druss, uses (a) Story of Rats as a vehicle to explore his interests in repetition, ephemeral tones, audio experimentation, and personal expression. (a) Story of Rats was created as an outlet so that he could investigate the similar patterns that were occurring in both his visual and audio work. With this project, the artist approaches the creation of musical compositions in the same manner that he approaches the act of drawing, open with subtle textures.

Combining sleep deprivation, drug addiction, 20th century theory and 21st century application, David Farrell(aka Dormant) brings dark and heavy to a new level. First released heavy ambient drone music under the name Southerning with Jessamine keyboardist Andy Brown on the infamous Drunken Fish Records back in 1996. Farrell takes his 15+ years of experience to draw together sources from guitar, synth, piano, cymbals, sax, field recordings and more to weave a thick tapestry of heavy drones, cross modulated textures, transcendent feedback and mind melting openness. Over the past three years he has recorded 12 albums which will slowly come to surface on the newly founded CRIPPLED SYMMETRY RECORDINGS. Look for Dormant, (a) Story of Rats, Dull Knife, Inh Halentropy, Heavy Teeth and other artists on the label beginning in late fall 2008.

Location: Wall of Sound

"A duo of turntable and baritone guitar, The Fun Years have disguised their instruments with atmospheric textures comprised of obscure samples and blissful repetition. The result is a stream of audio magma, filled with dreamy sound washes and subtle phrases that effortlessly tumble over one another. As artists such as Stars of the Lid and William Basinski achieve, The Fun Years use time as a musical tool without pretense. They concoct thick layers of rich drone and underlying harmony that artfully conjure notions of memory, space and the subconscious. While Isaac Sparks' sampling creates a thick haze of pops and crackles from abstracted vinyl recordings, Ben Recht's guitar work of arpeggios and open tunings draws the listener into the world of The Fun Years."

"The further down she climbed, the warmer she became, and her cheeks grew pink, her mile-long hair still dragging behind. Soon, the ice trapped within those infinite locks began to melt and fill the land with a trail of water that followed at her feet. Streams of silver in the morning sun veined the land from mountain to valley."

Thunder Grey Pilgrim (aka Mitchell Bell) has not played out very much at all really and that makes us even more pleased to present him. The excerpt above is from a short fiction he contributed to an excellent zine of creation stories. We include it because it echos the expanse and mood of his music. Although the music mood is a bit more inky depths ok? OK. He recently played a bill with KRGA if that helps.

  • Yann Novak

  • Free All Ages In Store Performance!
Location: Wall Of Sound

In Residence (variations) – Yann Novak will present a special set of live alterations to the original field recordings used on his latest release 'In Residence.' And since Yann's music falls into the delicate brushstroke ambient electronic territory, we are going to cover the floor with soft things and lie down for a few minutes ok? Deep breaths for everybody.

Oh, and here's what David Stubbs of The Wire has to say about 'In Residence': "Novak creates a sense of distance by abstracting his source materials beyond recognition - whatever is going in is obscure, and far away. Hence the vague, rotorblading, respiratory effects of the first of these three tracks - the sound of systems ticking over, yet whose undulating motions are curiously involving."

  • Rich Lehl
Location: Wall of Sound

The “7-inch Prints” is a series of limited edition digital archival prints that are cropped to the scale and format of a 45 rpm 7-inch single record cover. The prints are enclosed in a plastic 7-inch protective sleeve like that of your most treasured record collection. The imagery throughout the series doesn’t necessarily follow a particular theme, but are more like individual record covers absent of text that are uncanny, surreal narratives. The “Other Works” in the show are paintings, prints, and drawings that were a part of various series produced throughout the last 5+ years.

Rich has been exhibiting his work nationally for over 12 years in various galleries and museums. He lives and works in Seattle and is currently represented by the Packer Schopf Gallery in Chicago, Illinois.

FIRST ONE! Sunday, May 11 @ 5:00 pm
Steve Arntson plays the concertina. A concertina is a free-reed musical instrument, like the various accordions and the harmonica. It has a bellows and buttons typically on both ends of it. When pushed, the buttons travel in the same direction as the bellows, unlike accordion buttons which travel perpendicularly to it. Also, each button produces one note, while accordions typically can produce chords with a single button. Concertinas are often shaped like hexagons or octagons. Concertinas are fully chromatic.

Mr. Arntson plays original works on this instrument with incredible dexterity and brilliance. Onward into the future sublime bellows!

LOREN CHASSE At the heart of LOREN CHASSE's work is his interest in and ability to listen, often explained through the metaphor of the microphone being an extension of the ear. Using his sound locations as both the instrument and the studio, Chasse looks for particularly resonant and acoustical situations that are reflected in a peculiar way. Like many artists who push the boundaries of traditional art forms, Chasse is continuously drawn to seek new acoustic possibilities, and he is continually searching for new venues and modes of self-expression. Collaborations have been key to Chasse's work as he founded idBattery with Brandon Labelle in the mid '90s before pursuing the polyphonous psychedelia of Jewelled Antler, an umbrella to such ensembles as Thuja, The Blithe Sons, The Child Readers, and Of.

Bookmobile is Ben Torrence and Victor Couto. The duo began playing music together in early 2001, along with Choncey Langford, in Recidivist, a trio that performed completely improvised post-rock primarily using guitars, bass, and drums, as well as an occasional sampler, keyboard or effects device. Their studio activities began to shift their attention more and more toward the potential of the computer as a musical tool and instrument, which led to Lamplighter, their electronic alter-ego. Lamplighter began performing shows with computers (even pre-laptops) in late 2001, and shared the stage with a number of noteworthy artists including The Chicago Underground Duo, David Grubbs, Hrvatski, Greg Davis , and Damo Suzuki. Lamplighter released one album and a pair of compilation appearances before disbanding in 2003. "Will the powerbook trio be able to contain the low tech. onslaught of the primitives and avoid the out-flanking manoeuvres by the dysfunctional garbage collectors, or will the romantics hold the day with their instruments rooted in history?" - Keith Rowe (AMM, MIMEO)

Walrus Machine are a trio of jilted romantics making every attempt to uproot our instruments from history through low tech primitive dysfunction.  We focus on improvised free screech, howl, crispy sizzle and thud.  These improvisations are channeled through the lungs, arms and feet.  Mostly there is only alto saxophone, trombone & drums.

Os Coyotes are a band of full moon howlin' mutant hillbillies singing deranged songs around a campfire made of cardboard and rubber boots. Do not look them directly in the eyes.

  • Gentlemen of Leisure
Location: Rendezvous / Jewelbox Theater 2322 2nd ave. $5.00 admission

Siltbreeze Review of a Sex/Vid 7":
If there is one genre nowadays that I'd absolutely dismiss it would be Hardcore. But every now & again I come up against something that makes me eat my words. This time it'd be this awesome quartet outta Olympia,Wa what call themselves Sex/Vid. They got a great halcyon sound that recalls the action found on the ground floor of Fatal Erection, Touch & Go or Dischord back when 3$ ppd. meant somethin. If I hadn't heard it myself I'd have never thunk it possible. I'm impressed. Ding! Score one for the punkies.

Gentlemen of Leisure:
Absolutely ridiculous psychedelic punk rock. These guys are fancy lads. Lots of inscrutable weirdness and big hair sound effects make this band particularly marvelous. Catch them now before they implode from the weight of their own strangeness.

  • Free in store performance!
Location: Wall of Sound

Gel-Sol is Seattle based producer/musician Andrew Reichel, whose dichotomous sound spans from ambient soundscapes to complex, rhythmic electronica, creating a dynamic psychedelic universe with heavy emphasis on improvisation. Influences range from 70s prog and kraut rock to electronic and psychedelic. In 2004, Gel-Sol released the critically-acclaimed Gel-Sol 1104 (aka Music Made For You... And By You, I Mean Me.) on the UK's cult ambient label Em:t Records. 'Unifactor', the follow-up album, [and first Gel-Sol album to be released on Upstairs Recordings] continues the tradition of his unique, amorphous sound collages. Often compared to the Orb and Future Sound of London we're sure you'll agree that the Gel-Sol sound is all its own.

  • 'Plum' CD release party!
  • FREE! ALL AGES!
Location: Wall of Sound

"Goatgirl" is Seattle performance artist and vocalist Jeppa Hall and her 21st century story ballads. Bizarre, beautiful music featuring Jeppa's unique voice and storytelling, her parlour guitar, and the accordian accompaniment and vocals of Eli Kaufman. Jeppa as "Goatgirl," is an amazing storyteller and along with Eli's taciturn, straightman muppet sounding back-up vocals, they have a deceivingly innocent appearance. Yet under the cartoonish exterior, Goatgirl reeks of almost bad meat, the dark side of love and manipulation on the subtlest of levels.

Goatgirl's song "president combed his hair" has been included in Josephine Foster's anti-war fundraiser compilation "too much fire to roast human flesh," released by Arthur magazine. Jeppa Hall also sings with the Seattle Harmonic Voices and the duo "It's a Miracle!" with Jason Glover. Her performance personas include Queen Shmooquan- the transcendental burlesque clown, Donna Death of Seattle Semi Pro Wrestling, and Stem Cell Nation's Pip-n-Top and Jerry & Sherry.

  • Tiny Vipers

  • &
  • Du Hexen Hase
Location: Rendezvous / Jewelbox Theater 2320 2nd ave. $5.00 Admission

Pitchfork on Tiny Vipers: 'Seattle seems to take pride in its sloppy cut-the-bullshit ethos, and fittingly homegrown, newly fitted Sub Pop artist Tiny Vipers, aka Jesy Fortino, strips Joanna Newsom's en vogue freak-folk down to little more than a guitar and four-track. Unlike Newsom's beloved Lisa Simpson cooing though, Fortino is dreary, taking no flights of fancy. Her grief's bigger than yours, is the effect-- too real to hide behind a harp or woodwind section. What starts dewy-eyed with "We'll find a way" ends more somberly, polished off by Fortino's icy European chanteuse vox in the tradition of Nico and, more recently, Gustav: "I'm dying/I grow smaller each and every day, weaker still/ At least I'm trying." Talk about discontent-- Vipers is nihilistic enough to be the Emerald City's best attempt at blowing up the outside world in ten years, yet content to sit sulking in a dingy, one-person flat.'

Du Hexen Hase sounds like a superconducting lens of translinguistic matter generated out of the body of each of them at a critical juncture during a psychedelic bar mitzvah.

  • Tyler Potts

Location: A Free In Store @ Wall of Sound / 315 E. Pine Street

Tyler's musicianship grew out of a love of art, performance, and design. While getting his BFA in Electronic Media Art and Design in Denver he rummaged through shelves of the bountiful local thrift stores to assemble a performance ensemble of toy keyboards, tape players, xylophones and beater guitars. The thrifting pastime lead to performing in local galleries where extemporaneous stage performances would come out more comical than theoretical like they started. Architecture School has brought him to Seattle where he has finished his 52 Songs project—comprised of creating a song a week for a year—and was discovered by a group of modern dancers. He subsequently found himself performing live improvisation with LAUNCH dance theater at Velocity Dance Center and On The Boards. Recently released on Yann Novak's Dragons Eye Recordings is the culmination of these endeavors entitled Music for Dance + 52 Songs—an 2 CD set (one audio, one mp3 CD) of over four hours of music.

Potts' latest release is comprised of all new material that will be available at Wall of Sound at the begining of December. The sound of which is a progression of the music from the last few years as well as a new step in creating a cohesive album of diverse songs.

listen at http://www.tylerpotts.com

"Tyler Potts made a song every week for an entire year. That kind of diligence and discipline is humbling. Of course, sheer quantity doesn't necessarily mean much. Diminishing returns, etc. But Potts's newly issued 52 Songs, a disc of MP3s that's bundled together in a DVD case with a CD-R titled Music for Dance on Seattle's excellent Dragon's Eye Recordings, maintains a ridiculously high level of sound design over its 210 minutes.Potts's winsome, introspective compositions skillfully blend both digital and analog sound palettes. Music for Dance recalls Boards of Canada's decaying tones and emotionally charged, miniaturist melodies. A penumbra of hazy chords haunts Potts's tracks, stirring up complex, poignant feelings while avoiding clichés. The sound here, and on 52 Songs, is distinctive, handcrafted without being precious." -Dave Segal, Data Breaker, The Stranger, 2006

  • Diminished Men

  • and
  • The Curious Mystery
Location: Rendezvous / Jewelbox Theater 2320 2nd ave. $5.00 admission

Diminished Men are a Seattle based trio blurring the lines between raw rock and the mood altering scores of cinema. Mixing horror and psych-fi western with a bat of surfrompbeatchinesefucklore, this outfit maintains a punk ethos while resting its head on the breast of past and present film masters. Diminished Men have been featured with the internationally known and much wondered about Maureen Whiting Dance Company, as well as with the Seattle International Film Festival.

Diminished Men plow a distinctive, reverb-laden groove in Seattle's bustling music scene. Southpaw guitarist Steve Schmitt pulls off mercurial, twanging leads that corkscrew with Django Reinhardt meets Ry Cooder dexterity while the rest of the group help create eerie and exhilirating spaghetti-western themes; with a peyote chaser. Is that cactus talking to me? -THE STRANGER (2006 Big Shot nomination)

http://profile.myspace.com/diminishedmen

Curious Mystery employ modified guitars, autoharp and 100yr old banjo alongside glorified trash to build a psychedelic garage for the folks. Ghost ballads for the modern world.

  • Guardian Ear

Location: Rendezvous / Jewelbox Theater / 2320 2nd ave / $5.00 admission

Founded in 2005, Guardian Ear is an experimental quartet consisting of classical guitar, electric cello, oboe, and percussion. From beautiful melodies to fragmented shards of noise, they combine a myriad of influences to create haunting aural landscapes. Avant-garde acoustic chamber rock, perhaps? They call it Thrashical. Come hear for yourself as they explore the musical moment to create the soundtrack for your inner cinema.

http://www.myspace.com/guardianear

It's hard to pin down any large influence over the music, with each member coming from accomplished, yet entirely seperate backrounds, which seem to overlap in the strangest places. Was that a hint of death metal? Was that a cock-rock solo played on a woodwind? Did they all just grunt in unison? What did he just break? This band may not be for the faint of heart or easily frustrated, but they seem to be doing what I had previosly thought was a passé experiment, exploring new realms of music, new concoctions of sounds and genres, and coming out with something legitimately original. -Ilene Zunwald (Music critic from Usedom, Germany)

  • Jon McMillion (Wow85)

Location: Wall of Sound

Seattle's Jon McMillion has been producing electronic music for seven years now. A Pacific Northwest native, Jon is a software engineer by day and studio freak by night. Coming from a musical family, Jon grew up with a soundtrack including Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Wes Montgomery. After learning his way around the piano, then focusing on guitar, he was involved with groups in Seattle's fertile and eclectic underground scene, combining influences from John McLaughlin to Black Flag to The Fall. Hearing early Warp artists such as Squarepusher led him into the realm of electronic production, supported in part by the online community around Atom Heart's mailing list. His debut EP 'Inner Floor' on Orac was released in April 2006. With another E.P. scheduled for release on Orac, Jon continues to focus on experimenting with Electronic Dance Music.

He'll be performing @ WoS as Jon McMillion and Wow85. A set sifting in and out of dance and non dance related work.

  • Allen Hart

Location: Rendezvous / Jewelbox Theater / 2320 2nd ave / $5.00

Bio: Allen grew up with old time music and started learning banjo at the age of seven from his father. His father, Lewis Hart from Oklahoma, played banjo and guitar and taught Allen to play banjo in a two-finger picking style. In over 35 years of playing he has learned many great tunes in different playing styles from many well regarded traditional players. He draws his inspiration from the old commercial recordings of the 1920s and 1930s, field recordings from the twenties to the present, and from personal visits with the musicians themselves who grew up in the cultures and traditions that molded the music.

Where played... In the nearly 35 years playing the banjo he has played countless small clubs and coffeehouses and dance venues in Los Angeles, the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Among the venues and festivals that he has played at are:

The Troubadour - Los Angeles, CA The Northwest Folklife Festival - Seattle, WA The Festival of American Fiddle Tunes - Port Townsend, WA The Cuyahoga Valley Heritage Festival - Bath, OH The Galax Old Fiddlers' Convention - Galax, VA Sweet's Mill - Sweet's Mill, CA The Portland Old Time Gathering - Portland, Oregon The San Diego Folk Festival - San Diego, CA The Centrum Ethnic Dance Festival - Port Townsend, WA WannaDance Uptown - Seattle, WA The Black Banjo Then and Now Gathering - Boone, North Carolina Winter Grass - Tacoma, WA McCabe's Guitar Shop - Santa Monica, CA

  • Steel Tigers of Death

  • Krash un Lurne
Location: Rendezvous Jewelbox Theater/2320 2nd ave/$5.00

STEEL TIGERS OF DEATH Brad, formerly of Albuquerque's "Luxo Champ", plays bass. Morgan, formerly of NYC's "Xs For Eyes", plays guitar. Mike, formerly of Seattle's "Thug Life," plays other guitar. Jason, formerly of Seattle's "Medicine Hat", and "Thug Life" plays drums. All but Jason sing, and all singing may contain less than 10% actual singing. Someone told Brad that Steel Tigers of Death sound like something that SST would have released in the latter half of 1984, or something. Someone told Morgan that Steel Tigers of Death sounded Rocket from the Crypt-ish. Someone told Mike that Steel Tigers of Death sounded like a jar of nails bouncing down a hill. No one tells Jason anything. Hear what they sound like to you on their My Space site.

KRASH UN LURNE Krash un Lurne arose from humble beginnings no more than a year ago. Having taken off our rose colored glasses they became hell bent on creating guitar driven dark rock stripped down to it's simplest form. A writhing guitar, searing vocals and hypnotic beats from a mechanical box on the floor. Throw in some special guest session players on occasion and you have a goth, punk, metal, emo thing with just enough bitterness to make you feel uncomfortable. Experience it. Join the Kullective!

  • Son of Rose

  • Ear Venom
Location: Rendezvous / Jewelbox Theater

SON OF ROSE Seattle based computer synthesis project Son of Rose is the brainchild of Kamran Sadeghi, a former student of jazz drumming, music theory, and audio engineering. Sadeghi's desire to apply his education with the need to experiment gave birth to Son of Rose in 2000. Fueled by real-time modular synthesis, improvisation, emotion and sound, Son of Rose purses the evident and unlimited nature of sound by applying numerically specific frequencies to meticulously sculpted sound archives. The result is an aural structure of organic and textural leanings.

EAR VENOM Two individuals working together to express themselves as a singular sound event -vocal manipulation, repetition, homemade or altered instruments, feedback, and other effects are all used as a means to process their combined ephemeral emotions.

  • Noisettes

  • Dialing In
Location: Rendezvous / Jewelbox Theater 2320 2nd ave. / $5.00 cover

The Noisettes favor instant composition both analog & digital (the pixel fever of the technologically insane). With a mountain of gear, effects, and processes, the trio creates sculptures, pulsations, and slow maelstroms in time... Please enjoy the short-circuit of your reptilian brain and simultaneous massage of the frontal lobe as you join cosmonauts of inner space for a journey into distant regions of human hearing.... The Noisettes are: Thaddeus Koolhoeven, Noah Nine & Joy Von Spain. Listen/Look: http://www.myspace.com/noisettes

Reita Piecuch is from Seattle. Her musical project, Dialing In, is described by Birchville Cat Motel's Campbell Kneale as "radios, pianos, and keyboards recorded, re-recorded, and re-recorded again, and again, in ever more resonant locations in a never-ending quest to reveal the true nugget of glowing golden song buried beneath the superflous musical husk. Bask in the terrifyingly beautiful glow of this radiophonic Kali, The Destroyer. Unbe-fucking-lievable!" Dialing In does not use any conventional effects or pedals, and enjoys very much finding creative and unexpected ways to create unfamiliar musical sounds. The best thing about this show will be watching Reita's first attempt at conveying her "sounds of decay" in a live setting. It could be gorgeous; it could be a disaster-- but she guarantees it will not be boring.
